Welcome to Year 5

Welcome to our year 5 class page.  We hope that it gives you lots of information about what we have been doing over the course of the year.    Mrs Carruthers and Mr Shearsmith are the class teachers and Mrs Jackson and Mrs Bibi support the children's learning.   Below is our curriculum planner showing what the children will be learning over the year.

Please remember PE kits should be a white t-shirt,  black jogging bottoms and trainers or pumps.  Both classes have PE on a Tuesday afternoon and 5IS has an additional slot on a Friday.   Reading books are to be brought into school daily.  Homework will be given out half termly within a rubric grid.  We are working on making our children as independent as possible so please encourage them to take responsibility for completing their homework with your help.

For any further questions please do not hesitate to ask.

To support our Science topic, Materials, we went to The World of Glass in St Helens. We learnt all about the properties of glass, how it is made and uses.

Dance

We have been practising for a dance competition at Oldham Academy North at the end of March.
Our dance has an important meaning. Dancing to the Black Eyed Peas, 'Where is the Love' we are thinking about the recent terrorist incidents that have been taking place in our world.

For Science Week we took part in some fantastic investigations at Oldham's Regional Science Centre. We made toothpaste and brushed our teeth, invisible ink and our favourite SLIME!

We had a visit from FRESH (Food, rest, exercise, smiles, healthy) who helped us to understand all about healthy living.

Living Things and their Habitats - Meet the newest members of Y5

For Shrove Tuesday we had a pancake toss competition in return for an item of food that we could donate to the food bank. We really enjoyed it.

In design technology we have been tasting biscuits that are on the market. We then used this information to design, make and evaluate our own biscuits. We thought they were fantastic.

In Art we have looked at the architecture in our local area. We have been sketching, collaging, using water colours and clay.

We have been conducting lots of investigations throughout our Science topic, Materials.

In science we made our own water cycles

We enjoyed singing carols in St Thomas Church over the Christmas period

In maths we have been ordering numbers to 1,000,000

The Romans

We had a fantastic Roman day learning about the life of a Roman, what they brought to the UK and why their army was so successful.

Going into battle

We were given a shield, a helmet and a wooden sword. We practised marching and charging into battle, Roman style.

The Ancient Greeks

We all had a fantastic day learning all about the ancient Greeks.  We listened to a talk on the geography of Greece and how the Ancient Greek democratic state worked.  We then really enjoyed performing a play of Theseus and the Minotaur in the peace garden. (Well done to the actresses and actors!)   It was very funny!    We also completed a Greek quiz, played a Greek game, marched as an army and performed in the Olympics.ā€‹

Our trip to the World of Glass

We had a fantastic time at the World of Glass in St Helens.  We visited the Victorian Pilkington glass factory and learnt about how glass windows were made.   After that we took part in some glass painting and then went into the museum to learn about the properties of glass.  It was brilliant seeing the glass blowing demonstration and we even got to bring a plate made by the glass blowers home.   A day which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

On Monday 29th February we went to Lancashire Cricket Club to learn about healthy living.  We were very lucky to do all of our learning in the conference room and were also able to have our lunch in the player and media room.  We really enjoyed learning about all of the parts of our heart, labelling the heart and thinking about healthy food that we could eat to give us a healthy body.   We also learnt about how smoking can seriously damage our heart and lead to all sorts of diseases.  At the end of the day we played a game of cricket and three of the children won cricket bats for there fantastic contributions over the course of the day.

See our photographs below.

We have been learning about fractions.  In the pictures below you can see us making our own  fraction wall and then a comparing game.  Recently we have been learning how to order fractions by finding the common denominator.  Have a look at our pictures.

We have started learning all about equivalent fractions.

We have a no tolerance approach to bully at St Thomas School.  Year 5 have started some work on their thoughts on situations that are bullying and those that are less serious.
